In Japan, homelessness and poverty are common sights. People are often seen sleeping in the subway stations, with only newspapers as cover. According to Masanori Matsumura, a primary school teacher, more children in Japan today are unable to afford classroom supplies. Also, the expanding poverty is hitting "the most vulnerable victims - children."
There are several reasons why there is a large number of people unable to have a roof over their heads, some of which will be discussed here.

causes
One undeniable reason behind poverty in Japan is the aging population. There are many elderly in Japan, which exceeds the number of people in the workforce. As a result, there are not many people to provide for them. As a result of their pride, these people then hide their dire financial situations, so the government is unaware of it and unable to help them.
Also, due to years of competition with China, a wide market of low paying jobs have been created instead of high paying jobs. Hence, even the highly educated can be seen doing minimum-wage jobs such as cleaning up the subway station. Therefore, the people in Japan are unable to earn enough to support themselves, not to mention their parents or relatives. This eventually results in them losing their homes and experiencing financial difficulties.

effects
According to Matsumura, as a result of parents being unable to earn enough money, they spend hours at work to make a living and to support their families. Sometimes, they spend so much time at work that they are unable to attend school events in which their children are involved in. This comes at a cost - children, unable to understand the situation their families are in get angry and frustrated. They feel neglected, which can result in violence.
